Until now, I’ve been relying on epub:type settings in InDesign, and the Access Aide plugin in Sigil (after export) to get the aria roles correct in the epub.
But after reading the suggestions from the Accessibility Group who are advising Adobe, it seems better to stop using epub:type and work directly with aria roles.
But the technical documentation about aria roles, while helpful, lacks the broad overview that is helpful in understanding the context.
Are there any introductory tutorials, or videos, about aria roles and things like arialabelledby which are not intuitively clear?

Hi jhswift,
We do have this resource that can help you with Aria roles:
https://apln.ca/4-9-semantics-and-dpub-aria/
This is still a work in progress as we get more widespread adoption and we hope to have more resources soon!

Many thanks for that link. It still references epub:type. I had the impression that that is considered deprecated and not supported by assistive technologies , Perhaps things will become clearer when Adobe implements, in InDesign, the recommendations of the A11y advisory team.

epub:type and aria roles are not mutually exclusive and can be complementary. Aria roles are more focussed on accessibility but epub:type is more for system behaviors. You can continue to use both. Or give up on epub:types if you are just focussed on a11y and assistive technologies. 🙂
